ANDERSON, S.C. – Steve Brown, sales manager at ITEMA America, Spartanburg, S.C., and chairman of the Southern Division of the Southern Textile Association, died December 12. He was 63.

 

Brown, of Easley, S.C., joined ITEMA America in June after spending the previous 24 years at Picanol of America in Greenville, S.C.

 

He started his textile career in 1967 at Cannon Mills as a weaver working part-time while attending high school. He graduated from the Wingate College in 1972 and was in the U.S. Navy from 1973 to 1977, serving on board the USS Virginia (CGN-38) and USS Columbus (CG-12).

 

After graduating from the Textile Technology Center at Gaston College in 1979, Brown joined the Ruti Corporation as a service engineer working on air-jet weaving machines. In 1983 Brown joined Springs Mills and worked in the Fort Mill, S.C., Executive Office in the Facilities Planning Department as a project engineer for all weaving projects.

 

In 1990, he joined Picanol, where he worked as the U.S. and Canada sales manager for air-jet and rapier machines.

Brown, affectionately known as "Wonder Boy" by many of his friends, also served as a director on STA’s Board of Governors.

 

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Brown; daughter, Stephanie Brown Jackson and husband Daniel; two granddaughters, Kayla and Megan Jackson; a special aunt, Elizabeth Parks; and numerous cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Braxton Brown.
