CLEMSON, S.C. – Thomas Daniel Efland, retired acting dean, J.E. Sirrine Foundation Professor in Textiles and the first Head of the Textile Research Department at Clemson University, died November 10. He was 91.

A WWII veteran who served a lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corp., Efland graduted from N.C. State with a degree in textile engineering. During his 35 years at Clemson, he served as professor, associate dean and acting dean.

From his teaching at Clemson University and involvement in the broader industry, Efland was recognized as one of the leading experts in textiles and the knitting world. He was frequently asked to serve as expert witness in lawsuits related to the textile and garment industry. When an international textile company planned to build a new plant or implement new technology, he was often among the first experts consulted.
