COLUMBIA, S.C. - Teijin Ltd., a Japanese chemical, pharmaceutical and information technology company, will construct a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Greenwood County, S.C., the S.C. Dept. of Commerce announced.

Creating 220 new jobs, the project is expected to bring $600 million in new capital investment to Greenwood County – the largest initial capital investment by a company in the county's history.

Founded in 1918, Teijin is a technology-driven global group offering advanced solutions in the areas of sustainable transportation; information and electronics; safety and protection; environment and energy; and healthcare. The company's main fields of operation include high-performance fibers, such as aramid, carbon fibers and composites, resin processing, polyester fibers and more. The group has approximately 150 companies and 16,000 employees in 20 countries worldwide.

"After an extensive site selection process that included six states, Teijin selected Greenwood, S.C., because of its pro-business atmosphere and proactive support from Governor (Nikki) Haley and her team, as well as local government officials,” said Teijin Director of Government Relations Wayne Trotter. “We were also attracted to the diversity of Greenwood's citizens, the community's rich history of welcoming foreign investment and the excellent training opportunities available at Piedmont Technical College. We plan to invest in resources to develop new and innovative products to meet the increasing demands of the global carbon fiber market."

Located along S.C. Highway 246 in Greenwood, S.C., the company will be constructing a carbon fiber manufacturing facility to supply the automotive, aerospace and industrial markets. With a very high strength-to-weight ratio, carbon fiber is an environmentally friendly solution for the advanced manufacturing industry.

"When a company invests $600 million in our state and our people, it shows a real commitment to working on a lasting partnership, and we couldn't be more grateful for the commitment Teijin has shown today,” said Gov. Haley. “We're excited to welcome the newest member of the South Carolina family to its new home and look forward to seeing the tremendous impact these 220 new jobs will have in Greenwood County and across the state."
