MUNICH –The biggest brands in the USA require fabric to be digitized as they equip designers with 3D prototyping software.

Start-ups and established brands are speeding up production times and reducing sampling costs with the "fast fashion" phenomenon of 3D rendering. Industry suppliers of fabric must adapt by going digital.

Vizoo, based here, provides the state-of-the-art hardware and software to capture the visual properties of a fabric necessary to bring the real deal to life in 3D programs.

"The fabric parameters should be entered in a certain way that the outcome is a true-to-life virtual garment," said Evri Papahristou, Ph.D. in fashion engineering.

Vizoo's xTex scanning system measures materials with the help of a DSLR camera and numerous lights, extracting visual properties such as color, structure, reflectance and transparency. In the xTex software, multiple tools and algorithms help users to create a perfect repeat.

Designers need not wait for a sample to arrive at their doorstep; the digitized assets are available as quickly as they can be emailed.

Companies such as adidas, Hugo Boss and PVH are already utilizing the Vizoo workflow, helping to bring the next step of realism to their 3D garments.

Retail and e-tail giants Walmart and Amazon are gearing up their 3D programs for customization and print (or sew)-on-demand.

"I'd like to see the suppliers providing 3D assets for fabric," said Carolina Haddad, senior technical design manager for Walmart.

Vizoo makes xTex, the state-of-the-art fabric digitization system for footwear, apparel, interior design and automotive materials. Vizoo is headed by inventors Martin Semsch and Reinhard Meier, who began at Adidas and left to start their own company in 2013.
