Südwolle Group, a Germany-based producer of spun wool yarns, plans to open its first U.S. facility, an 18,000-square-foot distribution center in Mount Airy, N.C., according to reports.

A company spokesperson told the Triad Business Journal that the facility will employ four people and will have the potential to grow from there. The site, now a vacant warehouse, is expected to open this month, various news outlets reported.

Based in Nuremberg, 94-year-old Südwolle produces worsted spun yarn for weaving, circular and flat knitting in pure wool and wool blends. Legwear and circular knit fabrics for active/outdoor apparel are key segments.

Mount Airy is conveniently located for many major manufacturers in those segments, as well as for other textile, legwear and apparel manufacturers along the East Coast and throughout the South and the Midwest, said Hans von Schuh, managing director of sales for the family-owned company.

In a statement, he said that the “U.S. market for wool yarns is critical for us and continues to grow in importance as consumers demand more premium wool products.”

Südwolle has production facilities in Poland, Romania and China.
