HANNOVER, Germany and CHICAGO – As the world’s leading trade fair for carpets and floor coverings, DOMOTEX showcases the latest trends and developments from every segment of the floor coverings universe.
The family enterprise Zollanvari – a notable manufacturer and supplier of handmade carpets made by the company’s network of nomadic weavers in Southern Iran – will once again be one of the star exhibitors. Zollanvari achieved added prominence in early summer this year due to its involvement in a project for the prestigious hotel Schloss Elmau in Bavaria. The company provided the modern-design handmade carpets that are a striking feature of its new “Retreat” hotel completed shortly before hosting the G7 summit in early June of 2015. The design brief for the handwoven carpets came straight from the hotel’s owner.
“This project was brought to us by one of our major clients, Saemmer Teppichhaus, Munich, a regular DOMOTEX visitor,” said Sanjay Purohit, CEO of Secaucus, N.J.-based Zollanvari Ltd. “Mr. Saemmer is an architect and so the specification for Schloss Elmau called for an extremely precise, minimalist style. We had to make sure that we met their exact specifications for the red tones.”
Zollanvari rose to the challenge with a special combination of natural dyes. Zollanvari carpets were placed in the hotel’s public spaces and in all the suites occupied by G7 leaders and their retinue. The firm also created a special yellow carpet for the hall entrance to Schloss Elmau’s Spa.
Located approximately 100 kilometers to the south of Munich on the edge of the Alps, Schloss Elmau hotel is set against a spectacularly picturesque landscape. Its companion “Retreat” hotel, completed in March of this year, was seen by viewers of television broadcasts across the world during the 2015 G7 Summit, when the venue hosted numerous heads of state. At this five-star hotel, the “red carpet” is virtually rolled out every single day, and the fine carpets adorning Schloss Elmau embody the royal treatment enjoyed by its distinguished guests.
Hotel owner Dietmar Müller-Elmau has a penchant for handcrafted carpets and personally calls all the design shots at his hotel establishments. This is not only evident in the Amaleh carpets by Zollanvari used for the refurbishment of the original Schloss Elmau hotel, but also in the beautiful flooring designed by Müller-Elmau and produced by Zollanvari for the new Retreat hotel.
Making a bold statement
The resulting carpet creations are appealingly minimalistic and make a bold statement by virtue of their outstanding quality and special radiance resulting from the interplay between two shades of red. A plain border of light red surrounds a darker red area, thus evoking an expansive feel. The modern Persian carpets feature a very low 5 mm nap, which reduces the risk of stumbling.
As the dominant color scheme of the hotel deploys gold, natural wood hues and red, Dietmar Müller-Elmau opted for 100 percent highland wool in the rich red tones of natural plant dyes. Amaleh carpets have been traditionally handcrafted by the nomadic Amaleh people of Southern Iran for centuries. The carpets are dyed red using common madder, but the exact composition of the natural red dyes used remains a secret. Older roots are used to achieve darker hues, while younger roots produce lighter shades. The yarn is woven in different layers, making the carpets more hardwearing and creating rich, harmonious color effects. All the materials used originate from the Amaleh region in the Iranian province of Fars.
The hotel owner’s distinctive design signature is perceivable throughout Hotel Schloss Elmau and the new Retreat hotel. Dietmar Müller-Elmau was responsible for every design detail, including the wooden flooring in the hotel rooms. In each room the custom-made carpets measure no more than 3 x 2 meters so as to emphasize the comfort and style that characterize a luxury hotel. Throughout the foyer and lobby areas custom-made carpets with individual dimensions abound.
Handmade carpets are just one example of the myriad possibilities open to architects and interior designers wishing to achieve beautiful contemporary floor designs. Creative professionals from the fields of architecture, interior design and decorating will find ample inspiration and ideas for individual flooring design at DOMOTEX 2016. This trade fair has long been a leading international forum for the flooring sector. It is here that designers come to compare notes and catch up on the latest trends and fresh ideas.
“As the foremost global forum for floor covering, DOMOTEX is an important partner outreach for Zollanvari International,” Purohit said. “We have been able to reach high-end, high-profile clients from the U.S., all parts of Europe, the Middle East and Asia at DOMOTEX. Therefore, we have made a conscious decision to spend a substantial part of our international trade show marketing dollars on attending the show.”
The next DOMOTEX will be staged Jan. 16-19, 2016 in Hannover, Germany.
