RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – The American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) recently honored Nelson E. Houser with its Education Award in recognition of his numerous contributions to the association’s education and training activities.
Houser, the first recipient of this award, was recognized because of his leadership, vision and support in the creation and development of new educational content and programs, and the generous giving of his time to educate others.
One of Houser’s contributions to education was the creation of AATCC’s webinars on various topics of interest to AATCC members. Under his guidance and direction, the association launched a series of successful webinars. He was AATCC’s first webinar presenter, and presented five additional webinars on various subjects, including: an overview of dye classes and methods of color application; fundamentals of disperse, acid, cationic and direct dyes; and processing fundamentals of stretch fabrics containing spandex.
Houser continues to champion this initiative as one of his many efforts, and serves on a committee to recommend webinar content and presenters.

AATCC International Conference
Houser recognized as first recipient of Education Award
Houser, a member of AATCC since 1965 and president from 1997-1998, has made many contributions to the association’s educational activities over the years. He has served as chair of AATCC’s Education Advisory Board and Chemical Applications Interest Group, and served as member of the Intersectional Technical Paper Competition, Subjects and Speakers Bureau, and Textile Education committees. He chaired, moderated and participated in symposia and conference steering committees, and presented at more than 30 of the association’s programs.
Houser was recognized for this award at the AATCC International Conference in Savannah, Ga., on March 26. Upon receiving the AATCC Education Award, Houser shared that he was from a family of educators, and this is where he attributes his love of teaching and passion for sharing his knowledge and experience. He recognized the opportunities for learning and networking that the association’s meetings and conferences provided to him. He shared that there is a great need for textile education, but companies today cannot always send their employees to conferences.
This is what prompted Houser to focus the creation of webinars, workshops and symposia with functional areas of interest that will bring different areas of the textile industry together, believing that “if we can’t bring them here, we can take the learning experience to them.”
The AATCC Education Award
The AATCC Education Award was created to recognize those members who have contributed extensively to the educational activities of AATCC. Those who receive this award will have made outstanding contributions to education and training activities, initiated new educational programs and content, and generously and repeatedly volunteered their time to educate others. The recipient of this award receives a recognition plaque and $500.
