The were presented the award during the AATCC International Conference in Wilmington, N.C. They were recognized for their paper “Garment Ventilation Strategies for Improving Heat Loss in Structural Firefighter Clothing Ensembles,” published in the 2016 AATCC Journal of Research. The purpose of this research was to evaluate clothing ventilation designs for their ability to reduce heat stress incurred during firefighting activities.

About the authors

McQuerry is an assistant professor in the Retail, Merchandising and Product Development Department at Florida State University. She received her Ph.D. from the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 2016. She was a Ph.D. candidate and research assistant in the Textile Protection and Comfort Center (TPACC) at NCSU, and has research experience in fabric durability, wear life and clothing comfort physiology as applied to protective clothing systems.

DenHartog is an associate professor in the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science, and co-director of TPACC at NCSU. He received his Ph.D. in biomedical physics at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He ranked as senior scientist at the Human Factors Research Institute of TNO (The Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) and in the Chemical and Biological Protection Department at TNO Defense, Safety and Security, an independent, not-for-profit contract research organization in The Netherlands. Currently, DenHartog is an associate editor for the AATCC Journal of Research.

Barker is the Burlington Distinguished Professor in the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science and director of TPACC at NCSU. He is an internationally recognized researcher in textile protection and comfort technologies and in advanced laboratory systems for measuring clothing comfort and protection performance. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from the University of Tennessee, and a Ph.D. in textile and polymer science from Clemson University.
