ATLANTA, Ga. – The Georgia Association of Manufacturers (GAM) hosted its annual Safety Conference and Awards Luncheon on March 30 at the Georgia International Convention Center here.

About 300 manufacturing employees with safety responsibilities at Georgia manufacturing plants were in attendance.

The featured speaker for the conference was Brian Carson, president, Flooring – North America for GAM member Mohawk Industries. Carson’s presentation was entitled, “A President’s Passion,” in which he shared his personal commitment to workplace safety and urged accountability for every individual at every level of a business in order to foster a culture of safety excellence.

There were three breakout sessions after Carson’s remarks, which were:

  • “Why is There a Total Worker Health Agenda?” by Rob Stiles and Stephen Cherniak of Marsh and McLennan Agency;

  • “OSHA’s Electronic Recordkeeping Requirements – An Update” by Billie Kizer, assistant regional administrator for Enforcement Programs, U.S. Department of Labor – OSHA, Region IV; and

  • “Our Response to Failure Matters – A Lot!” by Bob Edwards, founder, The H.O.P. Coach.

After the morning sessions, there was a luncheon where the keynote speaker was Sam Bracken, former Georgia Tech football player, manufacturing employee, author and speaker, who shared his extremely challenging upbringing as an abused and abandoned child and his determination that led him to success in life.

After  Bracken’s inspiring remarks, GAM presented 115 awards to more than 30 Georgia manufacturing plants for their excellent safety performance during the 2016 calendar year.

Founded in 1900, GAM is the statewide trade association that represents manufacturers in legislative, regulatory and public relations matters. GAM also provides a broad array of services and counsel to the industry in the areas of human resources, public utility rates and energy, safety and health, education and training, workforce development, environmental quality, funded research and taxation.
