The QCSMS represents a major improvement of a product MIECO previously offered, the Quick Cross Section Plate, which featured a profile style of 2” x 2” (50mm x 50mm). ) The newly designed QCSMS profile sizes are a standard 1” x 3” (25mm x 75mm) glass microscope slide, slightly shorter than 3” (75mm). There are two sizes of slot width, length and slide (or plate) thicknesses.
Other ways to cross section fibers exist: One is to set the fibers in resin and leave to dry. But with the QCSMS, no resin is used, which allows fibers to be cross sectioned immediately on the spot and, or at any location (hence the name, “Quick Cross Section Microscope Slide.”)
The QCSMS can be used for a variety of purposes:
-
To perform an analysis of fibers’ and/or hairs’ cross section;
-
To take an image of fibers and/or hairs’ cross section;
-
To identify textile fibers and/or hair;
-
To verify the right fibers are being used; and
-
To perform quality control of fibers, including:
-
Viewing modification ratios;
-
Taking dpf (denier per filament) measurements;
-
Getting top light samples to verify delusterant; or
-
Analyzing fil counts.

WILMINGTON, Del. – The newly designed microscope slide, QCSMS (Quick Cross Section Microscope Slide) – designed and manufactured in the USA by MIECO – allows users to hold carpet/textile fibers while slicing a cross section of the fibers, exposing a fresh clean view of the fibers’ edges.
After slicing the fibers, the QCSMS remains holding the freshly cut fiber cross section, allowing the user to view the cross section under high magnification, primarily with a microscope.
A few other styles, most of them called “Hardy Plates,” are available in the marketplace, but most must be made in-house or outsourced to a manufacturer, which can be a long and costly process. But MIECO's QCSMS is kept in inventory and ready to ship.
MIECO makes the QCSMS from a surface-hardened stainless steel and is made to a quality that should last a lifetime. “Hardy Plate” and similar products used for taking cross sections of carpet and textile fiber are made of plastic, with small holes through it, made of a mild steel with a very soft copper probe that wears out with repeated use.
